What is different in a Stop/Start car battery?

What is different in a Stop/Start car battery?

A Stop/Start car battery is a type of battery that is designed to be used in vehicles that have a Stop/Start system. This system allows the engine to turn off and on automatically when the vehicle comes to a stop, which can help save fuel and reduce emissions.

  • There are a few key differences between a Stop/Start car battery and a regular car battery. The most notable difference is the capacity of the battery. A Stop/Start battery must be able to provide enough power to start the engine, even when the engine has been turned off for a long period of time. This means that a Stop/Start battery must have a higher capacity than a regular car battery.

  • Another difference between a Stop/Start battery and a regular car battery is the type of cells used. Stop/Start batteries typically use AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) or VRLA (Valve Regulated Lead Acid) cells, which are more resistant to deep discharge cycles than traditional lead-acid cells. This helps to prolong the life of the battery.

  • Finally, Stop/Start batteries are often equipped with a higher level of protection against voltage spikes and other electrical surges. This helps to prevent damage to the battery and ensures that it can withstand the repeated start-stop cycles of a Stop/Start engine.

Differences between a Stop/Start Car Battery and a Regular Car Battery: EFB VS AGM Batteries

There are two types of Stop/Start car batteries available in Australia – EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery) and AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat).

  1. EFB batteries are the traditional lead-acid type, which means the acid is floating in the battery, although they are still fully sealed and maintenance-free. They’re typically cheaper than AGM batteries.

  1. AGM batteries don’t require any maintenance, as the electrolyte is absorbed into a glass mat. This makes them more expensive, but they generally have a longer lifespan.

Both types of Stop/Start car batteries are designed to handle the frequent starting and stopping that’s common in stop-start cars. However, AGM batteries are generally better equipped to deal with this type of use.

The Balanced State of Charge in Stop/Start Car Batteries

Stop/Start car batteries in Australia are designed to maintain a balanced state of charge, even when the engine is turned off.

This means that they have a high reserve capacity and CCA rating for the extra load required for Stop/Start systems. This makes them ideal for use in Stop/Start cars, which are becoming increasingly popular in Australia.

If you’re not sure which Stop/Start car battery is right for your vehicle, it’s best to consult with a mechanic or auto specialist, SW Batteries can help you in this regard.
