Know Your Car’s Battery Type

There are mainly 5 common car battery types:

  • Wet Cell Batteries

They are known as wet cell batteries because they contain a liquid electrolyte. They are widely used as cranking batteries, which are charged by the alternator when the vehicle is started.

  • Lithium-Ion Batteries

Lithium-Ion batteries are engineered for higher performance and reliability. They are lighter and have a significant charge storage capacity with a low discharge rate. It can operate for 3 to 4 years on average.

  • AGM Lead-Acid Batteries

AGM Lead-acid batteries, a rechargeable variety, are available in various capacities and sizes. Although they are more expensive, they require minimal maintenance and are designed to be discharged and recharged.

  • VRLA

VRLAs are sophisticated lead-acid batteries that are primarily intended to be low-maintenance. They do not spill and do not require to be topped off.

  • I Stop Batteries

Most modern cars are fitted with I Stop batteries, a type of lead-acid, rechargeable battery. It gives power in short bursts to start the engine. The I Stop or Stop/Start battery also powers the car’s electrical systems, such as the radio, lighting, and heating/cooling systems.

Know Your Car Battery Voltage

Measuring the voltage of your vehicle’s battery might help you assess how charged it is. When the engine is operating, the optimal automobile battery voltage is between 13.7 and 14.7V.

With the engine turned off, the voltage should be 12.6 volts. If the battery is not fully charged, it will drop to 12.4V at 75 percent, 12V when only 25 percent charged, and 11.9V when entirely depleted.
